“If Need Be, Choose Again!”

by Lisa Brooks

March,  2008

It occurred to me recently that being addicted to “drama” or “struggle” is really not unlike being addicted to nicotine or alcohol or some other drug.  For every thought we think and every emotion we feel, a chemical is released in our body.  Over time we can become addicted to this chemical, just like chemicals we ingest.  Fear based thinking offers an array of thoughts, feelings and emotions.  Can you think of some negative emotions you find yourself addicted to?

If it is difficult to identify them in yourself, it may be easier to identify them in others.  Looking at others may be a good place to start… simply to gain awareness.  Maybe you can think of someone that complains to you about the same thing over and over...or they are angered easily or judgmental.

After you have looked at those close to you, now try to become a detached outsider and observe your past behaviors with an honest, compassionate heart.  Maybe you realize that you too, can be a "complainer"...  or, maybe you find yourself creating drama when there needn’t be?  Creating “drama” can be a bad habit.  People want their struggles to go away, yet when one is solved or taken care of, they find another to grasp on to.  And when there is no struggle readily available, they will create one.  What a waste of creative energy!?  The following thought comes from the book, “Emotional Wellness,” by Osho:

“I wonder sometimes if I really want to let go of my problems, to accept them instead of struggling with them.  It feels like some part of my identity is so identified with this struggle, the idea of dropping it feels a little scary.”

Yes, it can be “scary” to let go of old negative patterns we have created and have made part of our lives and identities.  Because even though they are old and even though they are negative and non-serving, they are a part of us.  But, I think it's even scarier to live an unfulfilled, "joy-less" life.

We’re all familiar with the phrase, “making a mountain out of a molehill.”  And why do we do that?  What purpose does that mountain serve?  And  "UGH"… how draining it is to create a mountain from a molehill … such wasted time and energy!  Simply observe how you feel after entertaining negative thoughts.  When you think negatively and you feel negative emotions, all you do is drain your energy.  You cut off your cord to source.  Almost like the umbilical cord that feeds and nourishes an unborn child is being pinched and nutrients are unable to flow freely.  The baby is being starved.  Then, if you go one step further with your negativity and talk over and over about it to others you start to bring them down too (if they’re not careful).

Also from Osho’s book, “Emotional Wellness:”

“When you are sad, angry, greedy, moving just within yourself and

enjoying your wounds and looking at them again and again,

playing the martyr, there is a gap between you and existence.”

When you are cutting yourself off from your existence or your source, it’s hard to manifest joyful life experiences.  When all you see is negativity all around you, then this is what you will experience more of.

Osho, goes on to say,

“If you feel that everybody is an enemy, you will behave in such a

way that everybody has to be the enemy.”

While negative thoughts and emotions cut off your energy from source and drain you, the energy of positive thoughts and emotions on the other hand creates more energy!!  This energy is not draining.  This energy flows freely and nourishes you!  How about getting addicted to this "life giving" energy!  What wonderful people and experiences will be drawn to you!?!

Use this knowledge to inspire you to rid yourself of old ingrained habits.  It may take time, patience, compassion and baby steps, but the rewards are far worth it.

Truly, the beauty and gift and magic in all of this

is that we get to choose.  We get to create our lives

Choose the way that makes you feel good and that gives you more

energy. Choose the energy that lifts you up and lifts those

close to you. And if you find you have slipped back into an old negative

addiction, especially at a challenging vulnerable time,

simply choose againOver time it will get easier.

Allow the newness to come in.

Allow yourself to connect with source and

receive the bountiful gifts you deserve!

Namaste
